From island roots to global reach: The story of Astrea Bioseparations’ four key sites
Published date: 30 April 2026
Astrea Bioseparations has grown from a specialist chromatography provider into a global partner supporting the purification of advanced therapeutics. That growth is supported by a network of four sites, each with its own role in delivering innovation, manufacturing excellence, and supply chain control.
These locations work as a connected system that enables us to support customers from early-stage development through to commercial-scale manufacturing.
Isle of Man: The foundation of manufacturing excellence
Astrea Bioseparations’ origins trace back to the Isle of Man, where the company established its first manufacturing operations. Today, the site remains the backbone of production and operational expertise.
It houses:
- Core manufacturing of chromatography media and products
- Process development and scale-up capabilities
- Quality control, engineering, and global logistics
With decades of experience embedded in the site, the Isle of Man continues to provide the reliability and technical depth that underpin Astrea Bioseparations global supply.
Cambridge: Advancing purification approaches and supporting complex applications
Cambridge represents our scientific engine, home to a growing R&D team of over 40 specialists dedicated to advancing bioseparation technologies.
This team brings together over 200 years of combined experience working with Astrea Bioseparations products and across the wider field of chromatography and bioprocessing. Their focus spans:
- Development of next-generation purification technologies
- Application support for complex customer challenges
- Translating scientific insight into scalable, real-world solutions
Positioned within one of the world’s leading life sciences clusters, the Cambridge team helps ensure new ideas translate into viable solutions.
Gloucester: Strengthening control, capability, and craftsmanship
The Gloucester site represents a strategic investment in end-to-end column capability and supply chain control.
Originally operating as Delta Precision Ltd, the site became part of Astrea Bioseparations through acquisition, adding engineering expertise and the Evolve® column range.
Today, Gloucester reinforces our ability to design, build, and deliver high-quality chromatography columns entirely in-house. This comes together through:
- Advanced column manufacturing and assembly
- In-house machining tools and precision engineering expertise
- Ongoing development of the column product range, including Evolve®
- ISO 9001-certified processes ensuring consistent quality
By integrating Delta Precision’s capabilities, Astrea Bioseparations has strengthened its control over a critical part of the supply chain, enhancing both flexibility and reliability while maintaining full ownership of column design and performance.
Canton, Massachusetts: Building a strong North American presence
Astrea Bioseparations’ presence in the Boston area began in 2020, following the acquisition of Essential Life Solutions (ELS), a chromatography column specialist based in Stoughton, Massachusetts.
This acquisition marked a significant milestone, giving us our first direct operational footprint in North America and expanding its column offering with established technologies, including the SNAP® column range.
As demand in the region continued to grow, particularly for advanced therapies and faster turnaround times, we expanded our US operations and established a new, larger facility in Canton, Massachusetts to increase capacity and enhance customer support.
Today, the Canton, MA site serves as a key hub for North American operations, allowing for:
- Cleanroom-based column packing services
- Regional warehousing and inventory
- Faster delivery and improved responsiveness for US customers
Located just outside one of the world’s leading biotech clusters, the site enables closer collaboration with customers while reinforcing our commitment to global accessibility.
One network, four strengths
Each site contributes a distinct capability, but their true value lies in how they work together:
- Isle of Man → Established manufacturing expertise
- Cambridge → Innovation and application leadership
- Gloucester → Column capability and supply chain control
- Canton → Regional responsiveness and customer proximity
This integrated model means customers are supported across the full lifecycle of bioprocessing, from discovery through to commercial manufacture.
Built on experience, focused on the future
With deep technical heritage and a growing global footprint, Astrea Bioseparations continues to evolve alongside the needs of the biopharmaceutical industry. Its people, technologies, and sites are united by a common goal: helping customers develop and scale purification processes that support the delivery of life-changing therapies to patients worldwide.
