Listening first: Why collaboration is at the heart of purification

Bioprocessing is often associated with complex science and advanced technologies, but for me, it's equally about people. Every purification challenge is different and finding the right solution starts with understanding the people behind the process just as much as the process itself. I work as Product Manager at Astrea Bioseparations, where I help connect customers with purification solutions that support downstream processing. With a background in biochemistry, I have always been fascinated by how science can improve people's lives. Bioprocessing brings together scientific innovation, problem-solving, and collaboration in a way that has a real-world impact, making it an industry I continue to enjoy being part of.
No two days are the same
One of the things I value most about my role is its variety, no two days are the same. Some days are focused on technical discussions with customers, while others involve working with colleagues across commercial, technical and operational teams to support projects or solve challenges. Success often comes from balancing scientific understanding with practical decision-making, ensuring everyone has the information they need to move forward with confidence.
My interest in this field started during my studies in biochemistry, where I developed a real appreciation for the science behind medicines and therapies. Understanding how complex biological systems work naturally led me toward an industry where those principles are translated into products that can improve patient outcomes. When people outside the industry ask what I do, I usually explain that I work with technologies that help purify materials used during the manufacture of drug therapies. It is a part of the process that most people never see, but it plays an essential role in ensuring treatments are safe, effective, and manufactured consistently.
Every challenge is different
One of the biggest lessons I've learned has come from working closely with customers. Every process is unique, which means there is rarely a one-size-fits-all solution. While technical knowledge is essential, understanding the wider context is equally important. Factors such as manufacturing environment, quality requirements, timelines and future scalability all influence the right approach. This has also changed the way I work - earlier in my career, I was eager to demonstrate what I knew. Over time, I've realized that listening is often far more valuable than speaking. Moving through roles in operations, quality, and now customer-facing support has reinforced how connected every part of the bioprocess is. Every team brings a different perspective, and the best outcomes usually come from combining those perspectives rather than relying on any one individual.
Collaboration drives better outcomes
Communication is one of those skills that often receives less attention than technical expertise, but experience has shown me how important it really is. Even the most technically effective solution can struggle if expectations are unclear or teams are not aligned. Good collaboration relies on trust, openness, and a willingness to learn from each other - particularly when projects are moving quickly or challenges arise. One challenge that has stood out recently has been helping customers balance speed with consistency. There is often understandable pressure to move projects forward quickly, but reliability cannot be compromised so finding practical solutions that achieve both is one of the most rewarding aspects of the role.
The collaborative nature of the industry continues to motivate me. I regularly work alongside colleagues from technical, commercial, and operational teams, as well as customers, each bringing different expertise and experiences. The strongest projects are almost always those where knowledge is shared openly and everyone remains focused on the same objective. Ultimately, what makes this work rewarding is knowing that it contributes, even in a small way, to the development and manufacture of medicines. While much of the work happens behind the scenes, there are countless people working together to ensure therapies can be produced safely and reliably.
Staying curious
The industry is constantly evolving, which means there is always something new to learn. Whether it's a new purification technology, a different manufacturing approach, or simply hearing how customers are solving emerging challenges, every conversation offers an opportunity to expand your perspective.
For anyone beginning a career in bioprocessing, my advice is simple: stay curious and never be afraid to ask questions. Some of the most valuable lessons come from listening to people with different experiences. Technical knowledge will always be important, but curiosity, collaboration, and a willingness to learn from others will take you much further.
I'm inspired by people who are passionate about continuous improvement and generous with their knowledge. Throughout my career, I've been fortunate to work alongside colleagues and customers who are open about sharing their experiences. Those conversations have shaped the way I approach my work today, reminding me that the best solutions rarely come from one person alone - they come from listening, learning and working together.
